Pro-women group Gabriela Party-list has filed House Bill (HB) No.8859 in a bid to declare Aug. 14 of every year as the "National Memorial Day for Comfort Women".

A statement from Gabriela Monday, Aug.14, said that the bill aims to honor the bravery and resilience of the comfort women, as well as to raise awareness about the atrocities they endured during World War II.

"The comfort women were victims of sexual violence and exploitation, subjected to unimaginable suffering and trauma. It is our duty to remember their stories and ensure that such atrocities are never repeated," said Congresswoman Arlene Brosas, Gabriela's representative in the current 19th Congress.

"The brutality and violence faced by comfort women must serve as a wake up call for the Marcos Jr. administration to end its military engagement with the US and China."

Brosas also emphasized the importance of recognizing and supporting the surviving comfort women in their pursuit of justice and redress.

"We cannot turn a blind eye to the struggles faced by the comfort women, both in seeking justice from the Japanese government and in their everyday lives. The Philippine government must actively assist and support them in their fight for justice," she underscored.

"The bill will serve as a reminder to future generations about the importance of upholding human rights and standing against all forms of violence and exploitation. It is a step towards ensuring that the stories of the comfort women are remembered and that their fight for justice is never forgotten," Brosas said.
