An armed man who was being pursued by the police died in a shootout with responding members of the Southern Police District (SPD) on Friday evening, June 9 in Makati City. Brig. Gen. Kirby John Brion Kraft, district director of the SPD, identified the suspect as James Aviles, who was allegedly involved in robbery incidents in the area. Background checks on Aviles also showed that he has outstanding warrants of arrests, and was involved in a murder case filed before the Makati Prosecutor’s Office on May 26.  ###### Video footage of the armed encounter in Makati City on June 9. Investigation showed that Aviles, onboard his motorcycle, fled upon being approached by police officers, prompting a chase at around 10:55 p.m. The suspect was cornered by police along Burgos Street corner Kalayaan Avenue in Barangay Poblacion. Aviles reportedly drew his firearm and fired shots at the police as they were attempting to apprehend him. The officers, in self defense, “returned fire and shot the suspect in multiple parts of his body,” stated the police. The suspect was rushed to the Ospital ng Makati but was pronounced dead on arrival. Police recovered four fired cartridge casings from a 9mm pistol at the scene, which will undergo cross matching examinations.
