The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Tuesday, Oct. 11 raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 over six areas in eastern Luzon due to tropical depression Maymay.

In its 5 a.m. bulletin, PAGASA placed Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Aurora, Nueva Ecija, and the extreme northern portion of Quezon (General Nakar, Infanta) including Polillo Islands under Signal No. 1.

“Winds of 39 to 61 kilometers per hour (kph) may be expected in at least 36 hours or intermittent rains may be expected within 36 hours,” PAGASA said.

Maymay was last seen 300 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora, and continues to move southwestward at a speed of 10 kph. It has maximum sustained winds of 45 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 55 kph.

“On the forecast track, the center of this tropical cyclone is forecast to make landfall in the vicinity of southern portion of Aurora or northern portion of Quezon tomorrow afternoon or evening (Oct. 12),” PAGASA said.

“Afterwards, the center of Maymay will move west-southwestward and cross several provinces in Central Luzon before emerging over the West Philippine Sea by Thursday morning or afternoon,” it added.

PAGASA said moderate to intense rains may prevail over Cagayan, Isabela, and Apayao, while light to heavy rains may affect Batanes, Ilocos Norte, Aurora, and Kalinga.

“Under these conditions, scattered to widespread flooding, including flash floods, and rain-induced landslides are expected especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards as identified in hazard maps, and in localities with significant antecedent rainfall,” it added.
