Forty-five persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) were released from the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City last April 21 and 22, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said.

In its social media post, BuCor said the release of the PDLs contributed “significantly in the decongestion of prison facilities.”

Forty-two of those released were from the NBP’s maximum-security compound, one from the reception diagnostic center, and two from the medium-security compound.

There would be more releases in the next few days, BuCor said, as it pointed out that Director General Gerald Q. Bantag has been facilitating the release of qualified PDLs “not only to decongest jails but also to prevent spread of diseases.”

BuCor manages seven prison facilities nationwide. In 2021, a total of 4,610 qualified PDLs was released.
