Poe lamented the killing of 52-year-old Sonya Gregorio and her 25-year-old son, Frank Anthony, by Police Master Sergeant Jonel Nuezca in cold blood during an altercation on Sunday.

“Kinokondena natin ang walang awang pagpatay sa mag-inang sina Sonya at Frank Gregorio at nang iba pang mga sibilyang pinaslang sa loob nitong nakaraang anim na buwan (We condemn the merciless murder of Sonya and Frank Gregorio and others civilians who have been killed within the last six months),” the senator said on her official Twitter account Monday..

“Kailangan ng mabilis at karampatang hustisya para sa mga biktima at kanilang pamilya (Swift and proper justice should be given to the victims and their families),” she added.

Nuezca was charged with double murder after he shot dead Sonya and Frank during a confrontation over the use of ‘boga’, an improvised noise maker using during New year celebrations. It was also reported that Nuezca and the Gregorios had previous disputes over right of way.

The shooting was caught on footage, with Nuezca’s daughter also witnessing the confrontation and the victims’ deaths.

Poe, along with Senators Joel Villanueva, Juan Miguel Zubiri, Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara, Nancy Binay, and Sherwin Gatchalian, filed on Monday Senate Resolution No. 600 to look into the series of “unlawful killings” in the country to [break] the culture of impunity, especially among law enforcement agencies.”

Aside from the fatal shooting of Sonya and Frank Anthony, the resolution also mentioned the killings of doctors, lawyers, journalists, and other advocates in different parts of the country.

“The series of killings in the past six months of at least fifteen people from members of various professions, including lawyers and journalists, and other members of the community, exacerbated by the fact that justice remains elusive for the victims and their families, highlight the need to launch an inquiry, in aid of legislation, to identify the gaps in law enforcement,” the senators said in the resolution.

“Ang kapulisan dapat ang tagapagtanggol at hindi kontrabida (Policemen should be the our defenders, not the villains),” Poe said.
